Student Visa

Foreign students who wish to study in the U.S. may obtain a student visa to enroll full time in an “academic” educational program, a language-training program, or a vocational program at a school approved by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

An F-1 student visa allows the student to enter and stay in the United States for “duration of status,” meaning for the period in which the student is enrolled full time plus 60 days.

After the student completes the course of study, the student may qualify to stay in the U.S. an addition 12 months for optional practical training, which means gaining experience in the course of study.  Some students may also qualify to adjust their student visa status to a permanent resident visa.

In order to obtain a student visa the student is required to:

  1. be proficient in English or be enrolled in courses leading to English proficiency;
  2. have sufficient funds available for self-support during their stay in the United States; and
  3. The student must to keep a foreign residence which he/she has no intention of abandoning.
